Middle East Festival

Yesterday was the beginning of an amazing (hopefully) annual event bringing a taste of the Middle East to Oxford! AIESEC, with 11 other student organizations challenged students and residents to "Think Beyond the Camel" with tables highlighting students experiences living or working in the Middle East.
Our big marketing scheme was some of our members dressed up in a two person camel suit passing out "Think Beyond the Camel" flyers at the HUB. At first we were worried that might be advocating a stereotype, but in the end we decided it would be a good idea. First because it is an attention grabber. How often do people see a camel costume in the middle of Academic Quad? Never. Second, it was justified by the fact that the camel was accompanied by the "Think beyond the Camel" flyers. Definitely a great idea.
Uptown Park looked amazing. The gazebo was draped with red sheer fabric, highlighted by the dj's color changing lights. There was a canopy tent with mats, pillows and chairs for some social hookah and discussion. Every organization/ student had their own table highlighting their aspect of the Middle East. AIESEC Miami was highlighting not only our awesome LC experience but the Salaam program and our exchanges with the Middle East. There was some definite interest so hopefully we can match some TNs!!
The entertainment was fabulous. First we had an hour long performance by the belly dancing group Circle of Rihanna. The ten dancers were elaborately dressed in long flowing skirts, colorful tops and lots of dangling coins that made noise when they danced. All the different dances were choreographed to traditional Middle Eastern drumming. One woman brought out a machete and danced with that for about ten minutes... really interesting. Afterwards, we had a Lebanese dance troupe from Ohio State come and do some of their traditional dancing!
Unfortunately, La Bodega never returned any of our calls for food, but volunteers came to the rescue and made some amazing homemade food. We had humus, pita, kafta, falafals and much more.
I do think for next year we need to market the event better and start earlier. We also were thinking about bringing in some live camels to attract the kids from the community. I would love next year to use the projectors we rented. We just didn't get around to showcasing the pictures we wanted to. Overall, a fabulous event so zaps to Robyn, Kate, all those who came out and the other organizations! Let's definitely work on making this bigger and better for next year!

Good Times

Who can believe that the year is over already?

As I sat before my laptop composing an e-mail to the @US LCPs, the implications of this election really hit me - in less than 2 months I will no longer be LCP. No more Sunday EB meetings for me. No more GM presentations. No more late night AIESEC binging (binging = e-mails, planning, myaiesec.net surfing, etc.). No more.

In the midst of my anxiety attack, I got to the point where I announce who will replace me, and my anxiety disappeared.

Erin Conwell. Her unyielding passion for the core mission and values of AIESEC have helped revive @Miami during its darkest days. If I could temporarily suspend the democratic processes of AIESEC (trust me, I have been tempted many times) there is no one else I would choose.

Furthermore, she has a stellar EB to back her up: Alyson Budd, Mason Klein, Eric Lanman, Ashley Leonard, and Kate O'Brien.

@Miami has the potential to do great things in 2009, and I cannot imagine a better EB to serve the LC in this endeavor.

Sincerely yours,

Michelle Fakler

Ode to Fakler

Fakler is a maverick. Not only do we make quite the dancing pair (just ask A.King or Luke), but I've decided she's my AIESEC spouse. Here's how I figure.

On Monday, CNN released an article about how some people have "work spouses". I am going to expand it further. I have an AIESEC spouse. And it's Fakler. You can read the original, but here's my adjustment to describe me and Fakler's loving AIESEC relationship.

1. I depend on Fakler for office supplies, snacks and aspirin.

2. There are inside jokes that Fakler and I share. And we tend to awkwardly giggle about them at GMs and EB much to everyone's confusion.

3. I can be bluntly honest with Fakler about her appearance, hygiene or hair (and vice versa). You're comfortable enough to point out that Fakler's hair is sticking up -- or that she's wearing the same sweats at GM that she did last night at EB.

4. When something eventful happens in AIESEC, Fakler is the first person I text to gossip.

5. At breakfast, lunch and coffee breaks, Fakler knows what to order for me and how I like my coffee (and vice versa).

6. Fakler and I can finish each other's sentences. Better yet, we can read each other's minds.

7. Fakler knows almost as much about my personal life as my best friend does. False. She knows more.

Passing the Torch

Hello AIESEC Miami!

As Caitie said, this blog is pretty...stagnant. But I wanted to take this moment to congratulate AIESEC Miami's new LCP: Erin Conwell!!! I know many of us couldn't be more excited because we saw the potential in Erin right away!

Michelle has been through and done a lot in her time as LCP (in fact, more than any LCP should HAVE to go through) and I know she will make as smooth a transition as possible during these awkward AIESEC times.

Best of Luck AIESEC Miami!

Love from Oman,
Katy
